Charles

Location & identity

A close-knit North End neighborhood

Charles sits in Providence’s North End, between Route 146 to the west, the West River and I-95 to the east, and the North Providence line to the north. Branch Avenue, once called Wanskuck Road, was completed in 1706 and still runs through its heart.

Industry along the West River drew immigrant families in the 1800s, and by the 1930s Charles was a densely settled working and middle-class neighborhood of one- and two-family homes.
