Olneyville

Location & identity

A historic mill village on the Woonasquatucket

Olneyville sits west of downtown, roughly between Atwells Avenue, Route 6, and Route 10, with the Woonasquatucket River running through its southern edge. It grew around Olneyville Square, where Christopher Olney opened grist and paper mills in the 1780s.

By the 1800s it was a busy mill district and rail junction. Many of its brick mills now hold lofts, studios, and businesses, and the river greenway has reconnected the neighborhood to parks and bike paths.

Lifestyle & vibe

Where to spend your time

  • Olneyville Square: the neighborhood crossroads and home of a famous hot wiener spot
  • Woonasquatucket River Greenway: a bike path linking Riverside Park and other green spaces
  • Riverside Park: fields, a playground, and river access
  • Mill buildings: historic complexes like the Atlantic Mills, now lofts and workspaces
  • Quick highway access: Routes 6 and 10 and I-95 nearby

Olneyville has a gritty, creative, close-knit feel, with industrial history on every block and the greenway as its backyard.

  • Rental market: most homes are rentals, which supports owner-occupant multifamily plans
  • Small samples: few sales each month, so prices can swing; compare recent nearby sales closely

Olneyville is best for buyers who want a multifamily or a loft near the city center and are comfortable with a neighborhood still changing.
