Location & identity
Where the State House meets the neighborhood
Smith Hill rises just north of downtown, bounded by the Woonasquatucket River, I-95, and the West River area, with the Rhode Island State House on its southern edge. It is named for John Smith, who built a grist mill here in 1636.
Mill jobs in the 1800s and 1900s brought many families to the neighborhood. Part of Smith Hill, including Holden Street, is a National Register historic district known for its Italianate and Greek Revival homes.
