Valley

Location & identity

Providence’s mill-to-arts district

The Valley neighborhood sits northwest of downtown, roughly between Chalkstone Avenue, Raymond Street, Atwells Avenue, and Academy Avenue. Valley Street runs through its center, and the Woonasquatucket River curves along its southern edge.

The river once powered mills that built locomotives, rubber goods, and textiles. Today many of those buildings hold artist studios, lofts, and offices, and the area along the river has become the Valley Arts District.

Lifestyle & vibe

Where to spend your time

  • Valley Arts District: galleries, studios, performance spaces, and festivals along the river
  • The Steel Yard: a former industrial site turned arts and fabrication center
  • Woonasquatucket River Greenway: a bike path that connects to parks and downtown
  • Valley Street: the neighborhood’s main corridor, with mills on one side and homes on the other
  • Federal Hill and Smith Hill: restaurants and shops a short walk away

Valley is creative and evolving, with industrial history, maker spaces, and a growing food and drink scene close to downtown.
