Hartford

Location & identity

Providence’s western edge along the Woonasquatucket

Hartford sits on Providence’s western edge, separated from Olneyville by Route 6 and the Woonasquatucket River. It began as farmland and grew in the 1800s around the Merino mill, which built stone houses, a general store, and a water supply for its workers in what became Merino Village.

Today Hartford is largely residential, with a mix of single-family and multifamily homes and one of the city’s most improved riverfront parks.

Lifestyle & vibe

Where to spend your time

  • Merino Park: an 18.6-acre riverside park with picnic areas, courts, a playground, and a bike path
  • The pedestrian bridge: a river crossing that connects Merino Park to Manton
  • Hartford Avenue: the main corridor for shops and services
  • Woonasquatucket River Greenway: bike path access toward Olneyville and downtown
  • Route 6 and Route 10: quick connections across the region

Hartford is quiet and residential, with green space along the river and easy highway access in every direction.
