Wanskuck

Location & identity

A 19th century mill village in the North End

Wanskuck is in Providence’s North End, between Route 146 to the east and Providence College, Admiral Street, and Route 7 to the west. Its name comes from a Narragansett term meaning low lands.

The Wanskuck Company built its woolen mills here in the 1860s and supplied uniforms during the Civil War. The mill and much of the surrounding village north of Branch Avenue are now the Wanskuck Historic District.
